About Cecil Dance Theatre

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Cecil Dance Theatre to enrich, expand and enhance the cultural awareness in the community and to provide extensive performance opportunities for its youth members. We strive to provide the community with family affordable programs that are entertaining and of artistic excellence. Besides performing in local theaters, Cecil Dance Theatre participates in community out-reach programs with performances for nursing homes, adult daycare centers, Cecil County Public Schools and other organizations. While our dancers rehearse and perform, we promote positive self-esteem, professionalism, dedication and team work as we educate them on both the artistic and technical aspects of dance production.

Cecil Dance Theatre is a non-profit performing company of student and adult dancers who are primarily from the Cecil County community. These dedicated dancers devote many hours to company rehearsals in addition to rigorous class schedules, which for some include as many as eight dance classes per week. A number of CDT dancers also receive intensive training in well-known summer dance programs such as the North Carolina School for the Arts, Joffrey Ballet School, Goucher College, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Rock School, Pittsburgh Youth Ballet, Point Park International Ballet, Ballet Regent Summer Institute, MD Youth Ballet and Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory. Several of our alumni have continued their dance study in college programs at the University of North Carolina, the University of the Arts in PA, Towson University, Wake Forest University, University of MD, Frostburg State University, Brigham Young University, and Goucher College. Former members have danced with such professional companies as AMM Dance Company, Ballet New England, Alban Elved Dance Company, and New York City Ballet.

CDT has the dual aims of providing extensive performance opportunity for its members and promoting cultural awareness within our community. Under the able leadership of Tina Travers, CDT members gain knowledge of both the artistic and technical aspects of dance production. Each year, the company presents two full-scaled performances and a concert of member-choreographed pieces. Cecil Dance Theatre participates in community out-reach programs with performances for nursing homes, adult daycare centers, Cecil County Public Schools and local organizations. As a member of ArtsReach, Cecil Dance Theatre is collaborating with the Cecil County Public School System through the CREATE and Fine Arts Initiative Grants to include enrichment programs which reach as many as 1,500 students each year.

We are extremely proud of our dancers, who are continuously motivated and inspired by our choreographer's  challenging and innovative choreography. We hope that you, our audience, will gain as much pleasure from seeing the show as we have in bringing it to you!

Cecil Dance Theatre's reputation for providing excellent productions has grown at a rapid pace during the past few years, but like most performing arts organizations, only a small percentage of operating costs can be covered by ticket sales alone. A percentage of our financial obligations include backdrops, theatre rental, costumes, scenery and lighting design. Our CDT Production Support Division helps by operating our Christmas Boutique proceeds, ticket sales, fundraisers and program advertisements. Our dancers contribute by organizing and participating in fundraisers; however, the $30,000.00 per production expenses far exceed the profits from these endeavors. Cecil Dance Theatre depends primarily on community support; therefore, if you are pleased with our philosophy and goals, and you are thrilled with the amazing family productions that we bring to the stage, please help. If you'd like to support CDT, please fill out a contribution form. Further information about Cecil Dance Theatre may be obtained by calling (410) 287-3546.
